Facing the Future Without PFAS: Is Your Business Prepared?

Over the past few decades, companies across various sectors have faced ongoing challenges due to evolving regulations on the use and manufacture of certain chemicals. Today, one of the most significant restrictions is looming: the proposed ban on PFAS chemicals — also known as “forever chemicals.”

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of approximately 10,000 synthetic chemicals known for their persistence in the environment and potential health risks. Widely used across industries, including the healthcare sector — from discovery research to end products — PFAS have been integral to product performance and innovation.

Now, two major developments are accelerating pressure on manufacturers to find alternatives:

  1. 3M’s decision to end PFAS production by 2025. As one of the largest suppliers of PFAS globally, 3M’s exit will significantly reduce market availability in the short term.
  2. The EU’s proposed REACH ban by 2030. If adopted, this regulation would effectively remove PFAS-containing products from the European market — requiring complete reformulation or elimination of affected products.

These developments raise serious concerns across the industry. Potential impacts include severe supply chain disruptions, product shortages, loss of competitive advantage, and increased costs for both manufacturers and patients.

To stay ahead, manufacturers, importers, and distributors must prepare to meet the most stringent global requirements — or risk losing access to key markets.
